How to store food to last longer?

Have you ever thought about the logic that leads us to store certain foods in the refrigerator, others in the cupboard and some on the counter or shelf? What is the real meaning of “each thing in its place” besides, of course, keeping the kitchen in order?

In order to better conserve food, ensuring that it lasts longer and remains fit for consumption, it is necessary to store it properly, under ideal conditions of temperature and light. In this sense, some foods end up generating doubts as to the right storage location. Are you doing everything right? Find out in our guide below:

FRIDGE

It is not for nothing that this appliance is full of compartments. Each space is indicated for storage of a type of food, depending on the temperature difference. Follow:

Door: the “open-close” causes the temperature to vary a lot in that area. The most recommendable thing is to keep foods here that will not be harmed by this variation, such as juices, water, sauces, condiments and preserves.

Shelf 1 - the highest: it is the coolest part, therefore ideal for perishable foods such as dairy products, desserts and cold cuts. Ready meals should also take up that space - preferably stored in glass containers with a lid (and never in aluminum pots!)

Other shelves: to avoid cross contamination, meat, poultry and fish should go to the other shelves, individually packed in a good quality plastic film. If it is a food that you will not be using soon, it is best to store it in the freezer.

Gavetão: as it is the least cold region, it is the ideal place to store fruits and vegetables. Take them out of their original packaging and store in plastic bags to increase durability and protection.

Tips: When you arrive from the supermarket, wash all packages before storing them and clean the refrigerator every 15 days.

CABINET

Did you know that lighting interferes with product maturation? That is why the cupboard is an ideal space for food that can stay at room temperature and need a dry, dark place. This is the case of grains, flours, liquids and packages that are still closed.

SHELVES AND BALCONY

In these spaces you can store everything that does not need refrigeration or low light, such as jars of dry and non-perishable food: sugar, coffee, nuts etc.
