Mini-vegetable garden: growing spices in small spaces

Planting your own spices at home is a great option to have healthy and organic food always available and at a low cost. And even those who live in apartments or small houses can make a very practical and functional garden. Want to know how? We have prepared a list of easy-to-grow foods and have put together five tips for taking care of your mini garden. Check out!

After all, what to plant?

  • Mint

Mint is a great (and versatile) option to have at home: the plant is used to make tea, prepare refreshing juices and even spice up some dishes. It is very easy to grow, but it has a secret: as its roots take up a lot of space, it is not recommended to plant in pots shared with other vegetables.

  • Parsley

Parsley is one of the most beloved spices in Brazil. It is not by chance that she gives the "finishing touch" to various dishes of everyday life. To cultivate, take into account that its roots are spacious, like those of mint, and need an exclusive container.

  • Basil

Did you know that it is possible to germinate that sprig of basil bought in the supermarket? Simply remove the leaves until only three remain at the top and place the stem in a glass of water. Then, leave the plant in a bright area (but without direct light) and wait for the roots to form. Finally, transfer the basil to a pot with fertile soil!

  • Rosemary

In addition to being tasty, rosemary is great for giving a tasty smell at home. But there is a secret when it comes to harvesting: never remove more than half the branch. This is important for the rest of the herb to continue growing.

  • Pepper

Finger-of-girl, pout or tabasco. You can choose the species you like best, because peppers are great for mini gardens!

And what are the necessary precautions?

  1. Solo

The first step is to buy a quality substrate in a gardening house. In other words, get good soil to plant your seeds. This point is essential for the plants to find all the nutrients they need in their development.

  2. Luz

In general, garden plants need four hours of sunshine every day. If you don't have a yard or balcony in your apartment, leave the pots on the windows.

  3. Fertilizing

The fertilizer works as food for plants. Therefore, fertilization is essential for the successful cultivation of your home garden. But remember: if you choose conventional fertilizers, your plants will no longer be organic. To have organic food, you need to make your own compost, using coffee grounds or banana peels, for example.

  4. Water

Many people have doubts about the ideal amount of water for mini gardens. The secret is simple: just keep the earth moist. To check the humidity, place your finger on the soil to the root of the plant and, if the soil is dry, water! But without overdoing it, okay?

  5. Pruning

As the roots do not have much space to grow in the pots, it is always necessary to harvest the sprigs of your plants or prune them so that they do not grow too much. In the case of pruning, just cut close to a yolk (the line where the leaves grow).

To use the spices as soon as possible, here's one last special tip: with Alpfilm Protect, it is possible to have a covered garden! Just plant the seeds, water the soil and cover the pot with plastic wrap to create a mini greenhouse. As a result, the growth process is accelerated and the plants do not dry out.

Easy, right? Now you can grow your mini vegetable garden in a small space and have much more quality in your meals!
